Abstract
Intravenous thrombolysis with rt-PA within three hours of symptom onset is the only proven effective treatment for acute ischemic stroke. The European license limits the use of rt-PA to patients aged < 80 years for the lack of clear evidence of safety and efficacy of this treatment in the elderly.
