Introduction

The musculoskeletal system consists mainly of cartilage, bone, muscles, tendons, connective tissue and ligaments. Balanced metabolism is of vital importance for the homeostasis of the musculoskeletal system. A series of musculoskeletal diseases (for example, sarcopenia, osteoporosis) are resulted from the dysregulated metabolism of the musculoskeletal system. Furthermore, metabolic diseases (such as diabetes, obesity) are prevalent and connected with the changes in the musculoskeletal system. More research are called for to expand our knowledge on the associations between systemic metabolism and the musculoskeletal system. To date, the roles of nutrition and diet during orthopedic surgery as well as the followed rehabilitation have been only partially explored. The mechanisms are far to be clear. Revealing the role of the metabolism of nutrients including proteins, peptides and others play systemically and locally in the musculoskeletal system will help the development of new therapeutic strategies to handle musculoskeletal diseases. This Thematic Issue will focus on the nutrition and metabolism in musculoskeletal diseases, especially the proteomics/peptidomics for the identification of novel therapeutic targets. The article collections will include: (1) Metabolism of proteins, peptides and others in the musculoskeletal system; (2) Nutrition-related metabolic changes in musculoskeletal injuries and disorders; (3) Nutritional status and musculoskeletal health; (4) Novel nutritional therapeutic strategies targeting the metabolism in musculoskeletal diseases; (5) Evidence-based research on plant-based natural products are also preferred.
